The need for qualified genetic guidance
The Need for Qualified Genetic Guidance
Medical Genetics is a postgraduate medical specialty, such as Cardiology, Psychiatry, and many others. However, unlike other medical fields, Genetics presents the greatest difficulty, not just for the patient, but even for the general practitioner to understand. This is so, due to the concurrence of several factors that apply particularly to Genetics, which in turn makes its concepts difficult to grasp.
The Evolution of Genetics
As the medical world evolves, and new technological advances are made, our ability to truly understand Genetics is constantly changing. In less than 50 years since the discovery of the structure of DNA, the entire human genome has been sequenced. When such a dramatic change affects the practice of medicine, regardless of the medical disciplines involved, corresponding changes in education and practice are needed in order to maximize the benefits of the newly gained information. Thus, in the field of Genetics, it is imperative to not only keep up with the latest discoveries and advances, but to study and understand their reasonings to better prepare for tomorrow.
Advances in Genetics are seen on a daily basis, likely because of the fast and continuous achievements in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics; the two essential fields where most recent genetic discoveries lie. When a patient fails to reach the proper specialist, they are severely prone to misinterpretations and self-diagnoses.
Self-diagnosis and the Internet
We live in a world where an abundance of information is available at our fingertips. Although this is beneficial in many instances, when it comes to medicine, particularly Genetics, it can be quite harmful. There are several reasons for this, the most obvious is because one lacks the ability to differentiate fact from fiction, particularly when one lacks the training and experience required to do so, but most importantly, it takes an experienced professional to understand the reasonings to why certain outcomes are present. For example, one may read an article published by a reputable source regarding a particular genetic disease, and although accurate, it may not necessarily apply to all individuals, as genetic diseases are only possible through a combination of factors. Thus, at times, even “accurate” information may be misleading. Lastly, unfortunately, genetic news are a frequent victim to media sensationalism.
Another common reason for “self-diagnosing” stems from the unfortunate “stigma” that surrounds genetic diseases. Seeking information or advice from non-qualified or inadequate sources, such as friends or neighbors with a similar diagnosis; the so-called “independent health-professionals” are equally harmful.
Our Mission
It is self understood that minimizing or overestimating an inherited or acquired genetic risk or characteristic could dangerously affect many aspects of our lives, such as shidduchim, physical and mental health, family planning, legal decisions, etc. which can lead to catastrophic consequences.
The Jewish Portal for Genetic Guidance was developed to provide educated advice for your genetic concerns. Right decisions come from accurate knowledge and proper interpretation of facts.
